Tips for a Beautiful LDS Wedding
Return to Tips Page

You will not have to sacrifice modesty in order to have a beautiful wedding gown.  You also won't have to break the bank.  Modest gowns are available in all price ranges.  If you've always dreamed of having a gown in a certain style, we can help you find it.  We have most every silhouette known to man and can customize your gown for your own personal fairy tale.

If you do not yet have garments, you need about 2 1/4" at the top of your shoulder from the sleeve seam to the neckline edge.  Your front neckline needs to be no more than about 5" from the hollow of your throat to the neckline edge.  This is about the same measurement from the nape of the neck in back to the edge of the neckline.   There is no perfect measurement for all people because body lengths and garment sizes vary.  These measurements are for a size 8 gown and a size 28 garment top.  We test our necklines on the silky square neckline top.  Also, if you like your garments tight, the neckline of your garment will be a little higher.

If you are outside of Utah and cannot find an appropriate style we can help you find one online or you can watch for inexpensive flights and visit us.  Even with the cost of your flight, our gown prices will make it worth the trip.  If you are unable to visit, rest assured that hundreds of happy brides have chosen their gowns online.  We have one of the most generous return policies in the industry.  Exchanges are no problem, we want you to be happy.  Outside of the state of Utah many bridal shops and seamstresses lack the experience to make a modest gown without sacrificing fashionability.

There has been a little confusion about what is allowed in the temple. White is indicated although I have seen an heirloom gown that once was white allowed.   Your wedding gown is to be modest in design and fabric, Some say you need long sleeved but every temple I know has inserts for inside the temple so you can have short sleeves for the rest of your day.  There is nothing wrong with this.  You can choose tasteful embellishments such as clear or white sequins, beads, lace or embroidery.  Make sure that there is no silver or colored threads as is the trend with designers today.  Some will say that your robes will cover your gown so there is no point on wearing it in the Temple.  This is an opinion and not that of our staff.  We believe that visually there is a big difference between a temple dress and wedding dress even when fully dressed in the temple.

The bridal industry is introducing colored gowns and embellishments into the fashion of weddings.  We are seeing this embraced even in our LDS community.  This is a personal choice and bears no relation to the guidelines of the Temple Wedding.  If you like, you can wear a temple dress in the temple and any gown of your choosing, colored or not outside of the temple as long as it covers your garment.

As long as your gown follows the guidelines, you will be able to wear your wedding gown in the temple for the ceremony.  Plan to wear a temple dress for the endowment session.

Your garment is to be worn as instructed throughout your life.  Choose a gown that you will be able to wear your garment with.  Don't remove your garment in order to wear your gown or tuck your garment contrary to the way it is intended to fit.  If bust cleavage is showing, have the bust side seams of your gown let out or choose the next larger size gown.  Some women have very high cleavage.  We can usually give you suggestions on fitting issues.  We've seen them all.

When ordering your gown, also browse our selection of headpieces, veils and accessories.  If you would like suggestions, call us toll free and chat with one of our professional consultants.  She knows our stock and can suggest the perfect slip, bra, headpiece, veil and all the details that will go perfectly together.  This will save you time and money.

If you fall in love with a gown that is not collarbone high and long sleeve
the temple has a jewel neckline, long sleeve insert in every size that you can wear under your gown during the ceremony.
After your ceremony you can return to the brides' room and remove the inserts for photos outside of the temple.

The Gallery by Lynette supports the standards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints as we interpret them.  We are lifelong members from many generations.  We have no wish to offend with our suggestions and guidelines.  The guidelines are very basic and each member must make their selection based on the Spirit.  After 26 years of business in Bridal and Formal Wear online and on the Wasatch Front in Utah, our gowns have attended all temples and been worn by thousands of members.  If you have any questions regarding the appropriateness of your selection for the temple, we suggest you contact a Matron at the temple you will be attending for more information.
